Successful Pharmacy School Applicants

As an undergrad, I was heavily involved with the Pilipino America Alliance where I held several positions.  I was also a dancer for INTRO during the first two years of my undergrad and towards my senior year I did some research on mouse embryonic stem cells which I found to be very rewarding since it confirmed my decision to be a pharmacist.  My experience at UC Merced definitely helped me prepare for pharmacy school.  I was challenged by the professors and was taught to think critically in all aspects of my studies.  This was important as all my professors now are challenging me in the same ways.  The courses that helped me hone my study habits have come from my microbiology and physiology classes I took as an undergrad.  Those classes were also my favorite classes despite the stress that came long with them!  It was worthwhile and helped me obtain the study habits I needed in pharmacy school.  In addition to my courses, the faculty and staff were amazing mentors.

My advice to pre-health students: besides the need for good grades in all classes and involvement in school organization I want to urge all of you to do that BUT gain quality understanding from them as well.  Come away with something being learned no matter what subject it is because the critical and analytical thinking you develop now will be with you forever into your professional career!  Even though some of your courses may force you to understand abstract ideas, it is all worth it!  I promise!  Get to know your professors as well and start building your professional career now.  Get involved!  It stars here; right now.  Creating networks and being personable are key to your success as professional.  And besides, you never know, you might just be inspired by your professors as well!  They've got amazing passion for what they do and if you an appreciate that, you can appreciate the class and take something away from it!
